David was honestly repentant of his sin. This was no “oh (btw)… sorry God” prayer for forgiveness. You can read in each line how sorry David was for letting himself get involved is such a slippery slope of lust, deception, cover up and murder. “The sacrifices of God are broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart” (vs17). God wants us to change on the inside. You might make outward changes that look good to others, but the reality is, God want to create in us a clean heart (vs10). When you make changes on the inside, it will reflect on the outside. This psalm is a great psalm to pray if you are seeking forgiveness for a sin in your life that is wreaking havoc on your Christian walk.
On a different note, how wonderful (even though it is difficult) to have a Nathan in our lives to point out when we are heading in the wrong way, down the wrong path. I can’t even imagine how hard it must have been for Nathan to confront David – THE KING – with such news, or how hard it must have been for David to realize his sins were exposed, but think about what would have happened if he had not.
Sometimes it takes someone from outside the situation to hold us accountable for our sins. I hope you have such a trusted person in your life. A person who is directed by God to confront you.
