In this psalm God is everywhere and knows everything and always does good. God is triumphant wherever He goes. God knows us so very well. There is nothing we can hide from Him. I find this both comforting and at the same time frightening. On the one hand, I am glad that God knows me so well, that he knows me, and still He loves me, but on the other hand, I would really like to not have Him scrutinize me. Maybe I would offend Him too much and He would not love me? Maybe I am too sinful for Him to care about me? I’m not holy enough for Him. But then I remember all of His promises to me, and I realize that I am not able to on my own live up to His standards and He knows that, but then because he knows that, He has also provided a way for me to be in His presence, to be surrounded by His glory. And that is through the saving work of Jesus Christ. When Jesus died on the cross, he made it possible for me to be with Him. It is because God knows us so well, that we have the opportunity to be saved. And I am grateful for that.
When David writes in this psalm “where can I go from your Spirit?” I find myself grateful that I cannot hide from God. God has created each of us, and He knows each of us and there is nothing that will separate us from Him, if we love Him. To know that God is with us wherever we go, and that He is guiding and directing us brings great joy to me. Even if I fail Him, I know that He already was aware of that sin and He is working in my life to point out my “offensive” behavior. This is a good thing, because more than anything else, we should be striving to live a holy and blameless life before God.
