Well, there is nothing in this passage of scripture that speaks to me of a holy people, following the will of a Holy God. Wow, today’s story is worse than the last episode of NCIS that I just watched, I thought we Americans were pretty bad but wow. In these few chapters there is rape, murder, revenge, disobedience, rash vows, kidnapping. Where is God in all of this?

I just have to reflect briefly on 10:1-5. Here are two judges of Israel their whole lives are summed up in five verses of scripture. Not very noteworthy information. On the one hand their names will be remembered and they didn’t do anything bad, but what did they do with their lives?

Judges 8 – 9
(Saturday)
Gideon still seems to me like an unlikely hero. He starts off afraid and hiding, looking for affirmation from God that he is doing the right things. Then with God controlling his actions, he begins to respond to a healthy balance between praising God and looking to God for guidance while at the same time, realizing that he is the leader God has called him to be.

God is calling upon the next Judge. Sort of an unlikely leader. Gideon. He is hiding out in a winepress, threshing wheat. Not what a wine press is normally used for but God has big plans.
