Proverbs 7 – 9

Monday

Have you ever learned a lesson by watching someone else make a mistake? In Proverbs 7:6-23, the author shares a life-lesson about a young man being persuaded by an adulteress, who apparently has no shame.

Like a hunter seeking after her prey, she lays in wait for the opportune moment and then grabs hold of the young man, taking him down the path that leads to destruction and ruin.

How many times (all you parents out there) wish that your children would learn from your mistakes instead of having to learn the hard way? But yet it seems like we don’t. We see other people doing something stupid and will even comment on it, and then turn around and do the same dumb thing or something similar.

What about this scenario of the adulteress screams “don’t go there”, and yet why do we find so many people getting involved in relationships outside their marriage? There’s a song by Casting Crowns that’s called “Slow Fade”, and it speaks to this issue of unfaithfulness. You see often it isn’t a quick decision but more like letting your guard down a little at a time until you fall into temptation.

If you have known someone, or yourself have had an affair with someone, you know the problems that it brings to everyone around. If we know these things then why aren’t we smart enough to avoid them.

“Now then, my sons (and daughters), listen to me (wisdom); blessed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it. Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors… For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord.” (8:32-35)

I don’t know about you but I would rather find favor from the Lord and learn before I make a mistake. And how do you do that? Heed wisdom’s calls. Learn by watching others, learn by reading God’s Word.

Heeding Wisdom’s call
