Proverbs 13 – 15

Wednesday

Momism. Have you ever heard of them? They are sayings that you heard your mother say. Things like,

– If God had wanted you to have holes in your ears (… tongue, eyebrows…) He would have put them there! – If you’re too sick to go to school, you’re too sick to play outside. – When you have kids of your own you’ll understand. – When you have your own house then you can make the rules! (Used this one on the radio in the car – it came back to haunt me)- It’s no use crying over spilt milk. – Beds are NOT made for jumping on. – Go play outside! It’s a beautiful day! – Always wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident. – You’re the oldest. You should know better. – You can’t find it? Well, where did you leave it last? – The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. – When my daughters were bored with “nothing to do”, I’d tell them, “sit in a corner and mildew” – not a popular thing to say to them.

Well, many of our proverbs, come from a parental viewpoint, along with some good advice on how to raise children too. In our world today where we have experienced brutality among parents with their children, 13:24 brings an image to mind of violence and child abuse. But in reality, this proverb is far from advocating abuse. A child left undisciplined also is suffering from abuse. Children need boundaries, they need to know what is acceptable behavior and what is not. To let our children rule the household can be detrimental to their emotional well-being. I would propose that what this verse is talking about is tough-love (not abuse) and how sometimes it is difficult to be the disciplinarian –yet as parents we have been given the privilege to raise the next generation and it is our responsibility and our duty to do so as best we can, and sometimes that includes a firm hand. Too often I see parents wanting to be “bffs” with their kids, but the truth is, they have friends what they need are parents. So I hope you will store some of these proverbs and use them as tools to help you raise your children in a Christian, godly home.

Standing up for our children
