Matthew 25

Friday

These three lessons are all saying the same thing. Do you know what it is?

Jesus is talking to those who have professed their faith in Him. He is talking to Christians. These are people who know Jesus, who know the commands, the work that needs to be done. He is telling us to be obedient to Him by watching, waiting and serving until His return.

The bridesmaids are watching and waiting for the Bridegroom to come. Obviously they are people who are followers of Jesus. So many of Christ’s followers keep themselves prepared. But for one reason or another, many Christians will take their eyes off of Him and fall away. They don’t stay prepared, they fall asleep and neglect doing the things that keep us connected to Him.

The next lesson is about using the gifts we have been given. Again, we must stay active – the message is don’t bury your gifts/talents or you will lose them. If God gave you a special ability – it is wrong not to use it for His glory.

The last lesson is about taking care of those who are sick, in prison, naked… Jesus gave a special command to care for others. While we are waiting for His return, we must not just “hang around” waiting for it to happen, we must stay engaged in the work that needs to be done, both for our own spiritual growth and for the welfare of those we are commissioned to care for.

As I read this, I see how important it is to do these things, Jesus is not just suggesting that we do them, He is saying, there are consequences for not being obedient – I don’t know about you, but I want very much to hear God say to me on Judgment Day, “Well done good and faithful servant.”  And I know that the only way I can do that is through the power of the Holy Spirit and the only way that will happen is if I stay connected to God through prayer, reading of His Word and participating in the fellowship of believers, through worship, missions and sharing the gospel.
