Matthew 20

Friday

Jesus, you aren’t being fair… have you ever wondered just what does being fair mean?

My daughters would fight over one or the other of them getting something the other one didn’t. Or begin treated differently.  I remember fighting over who got to ride in the front seat of the car. Geeesh. The back seat gets there at the same time the front seat does. I worked in a preschool and it was no different.  First in line, first to get their snack, your cookies bigger than mine. It’s not fair.

In our society, we spend so much time worrying about what someone else is getting and forgetting to rejoice over what we have.

My daughter just shared with me that some mutual friends they know just sold some sort of software invention for…. holy cow – 1 point 1 Billion dollars.  Now my first thought was, how wonderful for them, but I sure do hope they know Jesus, cause their share which is around $250 million dollars is nothing compared to having eternal salvation. But as we were talking I never thought – that’s not fair, they get so much and some days I’m wondering if my car will make it to work (I live a block and half away). I’m happy for them and I also think of the good they could do with that much money. Whether they do or not, is out of my control.

We should rejoice when someone we know has a blessing, not get angry because it was them and not us.

If you were to take this story of the workers, how would you feel if they were talking about salvation. There are some who early in their lives, receive Christ and there are others that are on their death bed when they receive Jesus as their Savior. Would you be envious of those who received the same gift of salvation that you did, but never did anything to serve Jesus, or would you be excited for them?

At the end of the day, it really isn’t up to you (or me) to decide what is fair in God’s Kingdom, because if we really talked about what was fair, would Jesus have ever gone to the cross for us?

Shalom
