Matthew 2; Luke 2:39-52

Tuesday

Matthew shares with us the remainder of the Christmas story – the visit from the Wise Men.

It is from their generosity to the Christ child that we developed our gift giving traditions at Christmas. These Wise Men were probably from Persia (East of Israel). Matthew never calls them Kings and he never says there are three of them. (This number came about because of the number of gifts.) But let’s not overlook the fact that these men were foreigners and they too are given access to Jesus. Matthew wants us to know that the birth of Jesus was not just for the Jews; He is for the whole world.  This was not something that just affected Judea, this was a world event.

Luke again shares with us a story that is not found in any of the other gospels. The story of the young boy Jesus, staying behind to talk with the teachers in the temple. His response to his parents? “Why were you searching for me? Didn’t you know I had to be in my father’s house?” I think we can give him a pass ‘cause he is… well God, but as a mother, I can just imagine their fear and stress over not knowing where he was for three days… can I say, “grounded.” I think that maybe Mary might have had to realize for the first time that this precious child she was given, was growing up and would follow his own path.

But let’s not get caught up in parental human emotions and remember that those learned men were amazed at Jesus “understanding and his answers.” Jesus it seems is aware of who he is (I’m in my Father’s house), but just in case you missed it, Jesus did return with his parents and was obedient.

When we come to Jesus with our own questions, we can be assured that He understands and He will answer us with wisdom and love.

Blessings
