And so it begins. Wow, Jesus’ first miracle and it was something so simple as to keep a host from being embarrassed. But did you see what the true purpose of this miracle was?
“This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.” (John 2:11.) Each story we read today has one purpose, that is to reveal Jesus’ glory, to show us who He is, the Messiah. The miracles that we witness are not about healing someone who is sick or dying, healing is only temporary. The purpose of these miracles is to reveal the very nature of who Christ is. He is God and His glory is being revealed through these actions.
The scene in the temple shows us that Jesus will be our judge. He tells the Jewish leaders that He is the One when he compares his body to the Temple. The scene with Nicodemus shows that God loves us, and Jesus is here to rescue us.
John the Baptist and his disciples once again help us to see who Jesus really is. John never claimed to be the Messiah, but spoke out very clearly about Jesus, who is the Messiah. John 3:34-35, “For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit. The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands.”
And then Jesus encounters the woman at the well. Again, we are learning that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah. “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.” John 4:42.
The question for us today, is do you believe? Do you believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Savior of the world? Do you understand what God is offering us? Salvation for all eternity, not just to help us through this life (although that is a wonderful bonus) but to give us everlasting life, with Him. We can’t do this on our own, but only through His power, His sacrifice can we be saved.
Shalom
