Isaiah 59-63

Monday
What famous person quoted Isaiah 61, and then declared that “today, this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing?”

Of course, it is Jesus, (Luke 4:18-21). What we see happening here is the prophet Isaiah revealing God’s plan when the days of trial and tribulation will be replaced by hope and freedom. When God’s glory will fill the earth. Chapter 61 announces the year of the Lord’s favor, and Jesus, who is anointed by the Spirit of the Sovereign Lord to “preach good news to the poor…to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners” fulfills this prophecy. In verse 61:2, it also reveals a time yet to come for us. “and the day of vengeance of our God.” This will happen when Jesus returns to earth again. Right now we are under God’s favor (grace and mercy) until the end times when Gods wrath and judgment will come over the earth and God’s plan for salvation will be fulfilled.

In chapter 62, you sense Isaiah’s desire to see God’s plan be received. “I will not keep silent, …, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn…The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory.” Isaiah’s is looking for a time when God’s people will be given a new name, a new identity. There will be a new peace and prosperity for Zion, the redeemed and holy people of God.

God’s desire is to break through our rebellious acts, not by power or might, but by love. God will come to us as the “Suffering Servant” (riding on donkey) rather than a conquering warrior (riding on a horse), to show us that he is coming to us in love.  He wants us to respond in love. Love for Him, love for our neighbor. Everything that God does for us, whether it is giving us mercy and grace, or discipline… all of it is to get us to turn to God. To put Him first and then order the rest of our lives around Him.

Blessings
