Isaiah 31-34

Sunday

What could possibly make brave men cry and weep in the streets? (33:7).

Losing everything they hold dear. And that is just what will happen to the people of Israel. They had put their trust in neighboring countries instead of God and so when Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians came through (destroyer and betrayer, 33:1) like a swarm of locust devouring the land (33;4), there was nothing left for Israel. Great destruction and a time of terrible barrenness (33:9) would take place.

Loss is something that will make anyone cry. And when we lose something because of our own foolishness, it is even that much greater. Isaiah is telling the Israelites that there will come a time when God’s justice will be experienced and it is not going to be pleasant. God will be like a fire who consumes evil.  “Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?” The only people that can live with God, who can be in the presence of the Holy One, are those who “walk righteously and speak what is right” (33:15) and as awful as it will be for some, it will be so amazing to others. So the question is, which side do you want to be on? (ok that’s a no-brainer) So what is stopping you from turning your life over to Christ? Those who have asked for their sins to be forgiven, will be part of those dwelling with God, who will supply our every need.

Shalom
