Deuteronomy 3 – 4

(Friday)
In our reading today, Moses is continuing with his retelling of the events that have happened up to the point of their being ready to cross the Jordan into the Promised Land.

Moses points out that God has handed over to them kingdoms on the east side of the Jordan River and that as He has done so with these kings and their armies, He will continue to do with the rest of their enemies. Three of the tribes wish to stay on the east side of the Jordan but first they must also help their brothers defeat the kingdoms on the other side. Afterwards they will be allowed to return to the land they wanted.

We also hear again of why Moses is not allowed to enter the Promised Land but he is given the opportunity to look over into the land.

Moses is now also given the assignment of turning the responsibility of leading the people over to Joshua. God tells Moses to “encourage and strengthen him” (3:28). Any good leader has spent time training and instructing his successor. Now it is time for Joshua to lead the people.

A word of warning is given to the people, don’t be swayed by the false gods, and the worship of idols.

I think sometimes we have a difficult time relating to the sin of idolatry. I mean, I don’t have any man-made objects in my house that I pray to, or worship. Or do I? Are there things in my life that I use to replace my total devotion to God? I may not have a golden calf, but do I have other things that I worship? Do I worship celebrities? Or possessions? What do I put first in my life? Job? Family? Some of these are good things in our life, but where are they in your list of priorities?

Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek first His Kingdom and His Righteousness and all things will be given to you as well,” this means that in our priorities:
God is first
. The end. No buts, no arguments, no what if’s. No idols. Period.

Blessings on the Day
