Trusting God may not always be easy.
Like a father who tells his child to jump and he will catch him, even when the child loves the dad, taking such a leap of faith, can be a scary thing. Jeremiah is told by God to buy a field. Now this field is occupied by the enemy, Jeremiah is being held prisoner by the king of Judah, Zedekiah and it just doesn’t seem to make any financial sense at all. But Jeremiah trusts God, Hasn’t God shown His faithfulness to Jeremiah time and time again? Hasn’t God has always been there for Jeremiah, so why not trust God now?
Jeremiah purchases the property from his cousin and then I think he started to wonder if it was a good idea. Was this wise? So Jeremiah offers up a prayer to God. This prayer I think helps Jeremiah remember the sovereignty of God and how everything is in God’s control. I think this is a good reminder for us to remember how mighty and wise and great God is, and that God is and always has been and always will be in control.
God also helps Jeremiah understand the reason behind buying this property. He did it to show the people (and Jeremiah) that the people will one-day return. God will restore their fortunes.
Just another aside observation about this reading. Do you see how Jeremiah has been confined to the courtyard of the guard? In other words, Jeremiah has been locked up (imprisoned) for his faith, yet Jeremiah continues to serve God. No matter what situation he finds himself in, Jeremiah is 100% for the Lord. I wonder how many of us find lame excuses (or maybe even some pretty legitimate problems) not to do the work God is calling us to do, but Jeremiah gives us the example to continue serving no matter what the circumstances are or situations we might be facing.
