“Meaningless, meaningless, everything is meaningless.” Solomon then illustrates his point by referring to all that he had done in his life; built houses for himself and planted vineyards and gardens with all sorts of fruit. Possessed many things. Work and pleasure did not make him happy, actually he says nothing made him happy, nothing truly satisfied him. So we ask, then why bother? Why do we continue to live on? What’s the point in life?
He actually makes some strong comments about his hatred for life, that death comes to everyone and makes no distinction. Everything he ponders over just seems to bring him to more despair.
In chapter 3 we read the poem (made famous by the Byrds – “Turn, Turn, Turn”) which consists of pairs of opposites, highlighting that there is a time for everything. Timing is so important. If one little thing doesn’t happen, ones whole like could be very different. For example, if I had decided not to go with my brother’s girlfriend to visit my brother in Erie, I would never have met my husband, Brad. One small decision, one small fraction of time.
Then Solomon goes on to talk about all the injustices that he sees happening in the world.
In chapter 4 we read about how extremes can be harmful and then how two are better than one, whether they are taking a stand against someone or sleeping together to stay warm.
Chapter 5 reminds us to have the proper attitude when entering into God’s house. He wants us to be careful not to do anything that will bring attention to ourselves and off of God. This section ends with Solomon suggesting that the only good for us is to pass through life like a shadow.
So here is a truth for us to take from all of this. God knows and is in control of everything that happens to us. Why do some of the things happen the way they do? Because God uses those events and situations to teach us to trust Him and follow only Him. If we try to life our lives our way, our lives become “meaningless.” I’m trusting that tomorrow’s reading will be less depressing.
