This psalm is a prayer for defense against our enemies. Did you know that seventy-two psalms (almost half of the psalms) talk about enemies? Enemies can come at us in all sizes, shapes, manners and ways. They attack, kill, rob us of peace and joy. They try to turn us away from God and his protection. Enemies will try to tempt us into thinking good is bad and bad is good. Enemies will tempt us into selfish thinking, wanting success and fortune and prestige. Enemies will come to us in sheep’s clothing, disguising their real mission and that is to separate us from God’s love.
So how can we fight our enemies? David prays for protection against our enemies. For God to protect him, spiritual help. He also asks for guidance. In order for us to receive guidance, we have to first be willing to surrender our control. We learn about guidance from reading our Bibles, from seeking direction from God, listening to wise counsel from other Christians. We also fight our enemies, when we hold on tightly to our hope in God. Trust in Him with all your heart, don’t rely on your own abilities. David also asks for forgiveness in this psalm. Defeating our enemies, means letting go of our past mistakes and repenting of them.
Remember to focus on Christ all the time, when you do, there is no room for the enemy to get a foothold in your life. If you are struggling with a problem, pray this psalm to help you put your enemy behind you.
