Numbers 26 – 27

(Saturday)

Yet again, we can see why this book is called Numbers. More counting going on. There are a couple of observations I saw though.

The first is in 26:8-10. There was some rebellion going on, you might recall from our early reading, but what scripture tells us is that their sins should be an example for us. Wouldn’t our lives be so much better if we could only learn from the mistakes of others rather than having to make them ourselves. How many times we tell our kids not to do something (because we know from past experience that it won’t go well) yet they feel the need to test the waters on their own. The bible is filled with two types of people. The ones whose actions we should follow, and the ones we should not. Hopefully we can see the difference before it is too late.

Another observation that I had was how important it is to have a person ready to take over the reins (so to speak) when the leader no longer can be in charge. Moses did a good job of making Joshua ready for the role he would play as leader of the Hebrews (27:18).

The third thing that I noticed is that women were not excluded from the inheritance that was rightfully theirs. In a male dominated world – God made special arrangements for women (27:7). This says to me (and we also know this from the way Jesus treated women) that women have a role and place in God’s plan.

Blessings on the day
