In the Old Testament if you touched something unclean, you became unclean. But this is the New Testament, and you and I are meant to be like Jesus. When we come into contact with the “unclean” it becomes healed. Not by our power, but because of the power of God which fills us.
The Roman officer had great faith. His faith was simply this: He knew that Jesus was in charge and could make anything happen by speaking it. Jesus gave the same power and authority to His disciples, including you and I when He sent the Holy Spirit. We need to realize that our words have power, because we are created from the “God Kind”. We are made in God’s image, created to do good works and to accomplish the mission that God intended from the very beginning. When I read passages like this, I am reminded of how I should be acting.
I love that Jesus says to the officer “I will come and heal him” and then is later amazed at the man’s faith. I wonder if Jesus was actually surprised? I think while He was in human form there were some things that He didn’t know in advance. One thing is for sure, people can surprise you.
