1 Samuel 15 – 17

(Tuesday)

One of my pet peeves as a parent was asking my kids Why didn’t you do what you were told or asked to do? and they respond with “but”. , I was going to, but…. I would have but….. I absolutely hated (strong word I know) but I really didn’t like it when my kids would make excuses. Just tell me like it is.

Don’t tell me why you didn’t do it. Well, in our reading today the word “but” get used a few times. Saul was supposed to totally destroy the Amalekites, everything… no exceptions; men, women, children, animals…. everything. Tough order, but it had to be carried out. Samuel tells us that God is grieved that He ever made Saul king. Wow. When God wants us to do something, He doesn’t want us to find excuses, He wants us to be obedient. But oh is Saul disobedient… let us count the ways.

Saul not only disobeys God’s command and spares the life of the sheep and cattle but he sets up a monument for himself. Then he lies to Samuel when he tells him, he has carried out the Lord’s instructions. No he didn’t. Samuel tells Saul that he has done evil in the eyes of God. Saul thought he was doing something great for God to bring back a sacrifice, but that is not what God wanted.

Now you may think how come Saul doesn’t get a second chance? Sometimes in life there are no second chances, no excuses. For Saul, his kingdom is taken away from him, the end. God can restore Saul the person, but Saul has lost his kingdom… no buts, or ifs, or ands.

God saw into Saul’s heart and realized that Saul would never be the king God had hoped he would be. (16:34). There would be no one from Saul’s family on the throne.

In walks the next king of Israel. This king will forever be known as a “man after God’s own heart.” Yes, we will see that David makes mistakes too, but his heart is always one that desires to love and serve God. In our reading for today is the famous bible story of David and Goliath. There is so much I could write about here, but I think one of the messages for me, is that David honors God above his own life.

David will give his everything to serve God; his path will not always be easy but when God is first in our life it’s the only path we can take.

Blessings on the Day!
