The work of the church, the work of the Lord, requires many people with different gifts, talents and abilities. Each of us has been given a place to serve in the Kingdom, just like we read about today.
There are gatekeepers, and soldiers, treasurers, officials, skilled workers, etc. But without all these people doing their “job”, the work would never get done. The same is true in the church, we need overseers, and teachers, missionaries, skilled and unskilled laborers, gardeners (lawn mowers, snow shovelers), people to clean rooms and cook meals, construction, decorators, musicians, technicians, finance and the list goes on and on. We need to use our gifts and talents where we have been called and where we are needed. “Having duties just like their brethren to serve in the house of the Lord.” (1 Chron. 26:12) Often there are many jobs that need to be taken care of in the church. Are you using your gifts and talents in service to God? God asks us to give 10% of our financial earnings to Him, do you think that it would be out of place to give 10% of our time and abilities to Him as well? There are blessings to be gained when we serve God inside and outside the walls of the Church. Where are you serving? How are you spending your time giving back to God? Are you serving with “wholehearted devotions (28:9)”?
Chronicles moves now to David giving his final words as he passes the mantel of leadership on to Solomon. Solomon (and not David) has been chosen to be the one to build God’s temple although David gave him the plans that the Spirit had given him (28:12). Not only does David give Solomon the plans for building the temple, but he also gave him sound advice for living a life that is pleasing to God. David charges Solomon to be careful to follow all the commands of the Lord God (28:8-9), To acknowledge the God of your father and serve him with his whole heart and willing mind, to seek God, to be strong and to do the work he has been chosen to do. This is good advice for all of us.
Blessings
